Once upon a time, if someone said that he was dieting - losing weight, everyone knew where they stood. It means cutting off dishes, sugar or fat and eating more fruits and vegetables.

Low-carb diets - An established vehicle for weight-loss, low-carb means cutting back on carbs (including some fruits and vegetables) and eating high-fat and high-fat foods. There are many different types of low carb diets, so one will suit most people.

Vegan diets - Following what it says above, a vegan diet means not eating meat, fish or poultry; and avoid animal by-products including milk, eggs and honey.

HCG diet - The controversial HCG diet is all about limiting extremely high calorie intake and adding gonadotropin (HCG) supplements. The FDA has issued a cautious warning about the HCG diet, but it still has fans.

Keto Diet - A low-carb variant, the Keto Diet encourages high fat intake and significant carb reduction to cause ketosis - a state of fat metabolism.

Paleo diet - A real explosion from the past, this. If you follow the Paleo diet, you need to eat like a hunter / gatherer 10,000 years ago. That means fresh food, nuts and seeds; lean meat and fish.

Low-fat diet - The more familiar territory here: Low-fat is easily achieved with a lot of fat-free and low-fat foods out there. And there's no need to put eggs in this diet - they're great for a controlled diet.

Traditional diets (cutting calories and exercising) - A diet our mothers have done if they wanted to lose a few pounds. They cut candies and cakes and walked to the store and back. Depending on the age of the mother, perhaps they also took an aerobic class.

Atkins diet - The big news when it first exploded in the health field, most of us know the Atkins diet and have a new idea. It has evolved over the years, and comes in different stages and variations, but it's still generally about losing weight by keeping your diet low in carbohydrates and high in protein and fat.

Weight loss diets - Very popular, eating lots of healthy things - lots of fruits and vegetables - all added to an easily absorbed smoothie. You can simply throw anything in the fruit bowl into your juicer and start testing.

Dukan Diet - A celebrity following gives the Dukan Diet a bit of slick, and even four stages of eating plans - Attack, Yacht, Merge and Stability. In short, it is very strict, heavy in protein and obeys the rules of combining food and the rate feels a bit like going back to school. 

South Beach diet - With the benefit of a sunny-sounding name, the South Beach diet is based on glycemic index. Although foods (mostly carbs) are limited during the first two weeks, most food groups can be enjoyed. Compared to other weight loss plans, South Beach Diet is moderate and healthy.

Combining diet and keto intermittently - Does the best method of dieting pay dividends? Those who follow this plan think so. Believers and some nutritionists believe that an intermittent fasting plan can work with the Keto diet to burn fat faster than the independent plan.

If you want to lose weight, do it sensibly and talk to your doctor about any specific concerns.
